Sun Moor Hill

The walk up Sun Moor Hill rewards you with proper views across the Yorkshire Dales - nothing flashy, just genuine rolling moorland and distant peaks that stretch for miles. It's a straightforward fell walk from Skipton way, the sort of thing you can knock out in an afternoon without needing a mountain guide or specialist kit.

What you get is moorland at its best: open ground, good visibility on a clear day, and the kind of quiet you don't find many places. The climb isn't brutal, though it's steady enough to earn the views. Most people manage it in under two hours each way, which makes it ideal if you've only got a few hours free.

This is walkers' territory first and foremost. Families with young children might find it a bit long, and it's not the place for a gentle stroll, but teenagers who can handle a few hours on their feet will get something out of it. History enthusiasts won't find much here - it's about the landscape rather than the story.

If you're staying at Coxons Farm or one of the other glamping pods and caravan sites dotted around the area - Wharfedale and Wood Nook are both within striking distance - Sun Moor Hill makes a cracking half-day outing. Pair it with Bolton Abbey Estate if you want to pack more into your visit. Weather dependent, mind you. In rain it's just a wet slog.
