About Oldham Edge
What makes it work is the approach. Most people come up from Greenfield, and the path winds through woodland before opening onto the exposed moorland. The final stretch can be a bit boggy depending on weather, but that's half the charm of Lancashire moorland walking. On a clear day the visibility is excellent, and you can pick out Kinder Scout and Bleaklow to the south. On a grey one, you'll feel properly alone up there.
This is a walker's destination through and through. Families with young kids might struggle with the steep sections, and it's not the sort of place you'd pop to for twenty minutes. Give yourself two to three hours for a decent loop. The best time is late spring through early autumn when the moorland isn't waterlogged, though regular walkers head up year-round.
If you're staying at Dovestone Holiday Park nearby, this makes an obvious day out. The park sits in the Saddleworth valley and Oldham Edge dominates the views from there anyway, so you might as well do it properly. There's something satisfying about climbing something you've been staring at from your caravan.
