Old Man of Stoer

You're walking into the wind on a moorland path that feels like the edge of somewhere proper. The Old Man of Stoer emerges slowly - a sea stack so thin and isolated it seems like it shouldn't be standing at all. Rising about 60 metres from the Sutherland coast, this sandstone column commands attention in a way that most landmarks simply don't.

It's a walk rather than a turn-up-and-gawk affair. From the car park near Stoer village, you're looking at roughly 90 minutes for the round trip across moorland and clifftop. The path is straightforward enough, though it gets boggy in places and there's nothing between you and a decent drop when you reach the promontory. The stack itself sits just offshore, so you won't be scrambling up it - this is a viewpoint visit, and the views are genuinely arresting. On clear days, you can see right across to Handa Island and beyond.

Walkers get the most from this. It's not a family stroll, though older kids who don't mind exposure and muddy boots will manage fine. Photography types arrive early for light, and it's the kind of place that stays with you. Late afternoon can be quieter than the morning crush.

Clachtoll Beach Campsite sits just five miles away, which makes this a logical addition to a Highland parks-based trip. Bring waterproofs regardless of the forecast - Sutherland weather moves fast. Free, obviously. Allow three hours including time to absorb the view.
