"Old Homer" Tree

The Old Homer is a gnarled veteran of a tree standing in woodland near Newry, ancient enough that locals have been pointing it out for generations. You won't find much fanfare around it - there's no visitor centre or marked trail - but that's rather the point. It's the sort of thing you stumble upon while walking through proper forest, or seek out deliberately if you're into that kind of thing.

What makes it worth the detour is simple: it's old. Really old. The kind of tree that puts your own existence into perspective without being preachy about it. The trunk is substantial, gnarled, characterful. The Mournes themselves demand proper time, and this gives you something to do between the bigger walks.
