Old Hartley Standing Stone

There's a Bronze Age standing stone near Whitley Bay that doesn't announce itself loudly, which is rather the point. The Old Hartley Standing Stone sits on the coast path between Whitley Bay and Seaton Sluice, a weathered chunk of rock that's been here roughly 4,000 years. It's the sort of thing you stumble upon rather than plan a day around.

What you get is a modest stone - nothing like the theatrical slabs at Stonehenge - but the context is what matters. This is a marker from a time when the landscape looked entirely different, and standing there looking out over the North Sea, you feel that weight of time properly.
