East Cramlington Local Nature Reserve

A proper working nature reserve rather than a manicured park, East Cramlington sits just inland from Whitley Bay and does exactly what it says on the tin. You get woodland trails, open grassland, and pond areas where you might spot newts, dragonflies, and the occasional heron if you're lucky enough. It's the sort of place where you actually see wildlife doing its thing rather than watching tame ducks on a boating lake.

The paths are manageable for families with older kids, though younger ones might find it a bit samey after twenty minutes or so. Walkers and keen birdwatchers will get a proper kick out of it, especially early morning or late afternoon when things are actually moving about. You can easily spend an hour here without rushing, or duck in for a quick forty-minute loop if you're between other activities.

Free access is the way of most nature reserves, and this one follows that pattern. Spring and early summer are when it really sings - you'll see nesting activity and hear proper birdsong rather than just trudging through brown mud. It's a solid addition to a caravan park holiday in the area, particularly if you're based at Old Hartley or Parkdean Whitley Bay. Close enough for a morning visit without commitment, far enough that you're actually in nature rather than the urban edge of town. Worth fifteen minutes of your time to check it out, even if it's just one circuit.
