Friends of LV50

LV50 is a Second World War minesweeper that's been preserved as a floating museum just outside Whitley Bay. The vessel itself is the main draw - you're walking through actual wartime quarters, seeing the cramped crew spaces and getting a proper sense of what life was like for the men who served on these boats. It's not a massive attraction, but it's genuine and affecting in a way that polished museums sometimes aren't.

History enthusiasts will find it worthwhile, particularly those interested in naval operations during the war. The ship tells its own story through its design and fittings. It's also decent for older children who can handle narrow passages and appreciate the historical context - younger kids might lose interest fairly quickly unless they're really into ships.

Allow an hour or so to do it properly. The nearest caravan parks are Old Hartley Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite and Whitley Bay Holiday Park, both within a short drive, making it an easy afternoon stop while you're staying in the area. It pairs well with exploring the wider Northumberland coast - plenty of seaside walks around Whitley Bay itself.

One thing worth checking before you go: admission fees and opening hours aren't widely advertised online, so ring ahead. The site can be a bit quiet in shoulder seasons. Worth the detour if you're already in the region, though it's not the sort of thing that would justify a dedicated trip on its own.
