Oddens Wood

Walking into Oddens Wood feels like stepping properly back in time. This ancient woodland sits just inland from Weymouth, and the moment you're under the canopy, the coastal bustle vanishes. The trees are substantial - old growth that's been here longer than most of us will be - and the forest floor is thick with leaf litter and moss that softens your footsteps.

It's not a manicured woodland experience. There are paths, yes, but this place has a wild feel to it. You'll find yourself among oak and beech, with the occasional clearing where light breaks through. The whole thing takes about an hour to properly explore without rushing, though you could happily spend longer if you're the type to sit and listen for a bit.

Historically minded visitors will appreciate that you're walking through landscape that's been here for centuries - this is old Dorset, not theme park Dorset. Families with young kids might find it decent enough for a morning wander before heading to Chesil Beach or the coast proper, though there's nothing flashy here to hold a five-year-old's attention for hours.
