Oban Promenade

The waterfront at Oban is where you actually want to spend time if you're staying in Argyll - a proper seafront promenade that gives you the full sweep of the bay without pretence. It's free to walk, naturally, and takes about an hour to cover the whole stretch at a leisurely pace, though you'll likely dawdle longer if the weather cooperates.

What you get is genuinely good. The Firth of Lorn spreads out before you, with islands dotting the horizon and enough boat traffic to keep things visually interesting. On clear days the light is sharp enough to make you understand why artists keep coming back here. The walk takes in the pier area where ferries depart for Mull and Iona, so there's always a bit of activity - families wrestling with luggage, day-trippers boarding, locals going about their business.

It's ideal if you're recovering from a full day of hiking or if the weather's turned moody and you can't face the hills. Walkers gravitate here naturally between proper expeditions. Photographers will find their moment on the water, especially at that soft golden hour before dusk. Children under eight might lose interest after forty minutes; teenagers will barely notice they're moving.

Stay at Oban Holiday Park or Tanunda Pods just up the road, and you're minutes away. The promenade connects you sensibly to the town itself, so you can amble from the waterfront into shops and cafes without backtracking. It's not dramatic or wild, but it's the sort of place that feels right after a week of lochs and mountains - something to settle into rather than conquer.
