Nuttall Park

The River Irwell cuts through Nuttall Park like it's got somewhere important to be, and honestly, you'll want to follow its lead. This nature reserve just outside Bury is proper woodland - the kind where you can actually hear birdsong instead of traffic. Ancient trees tower overhead, footpaths wind through undergrowth thick enough to make you feel genuinely removed from suburbia, and if you time it right, you'll spot kingfishers darting above the water.

It's brilliant for walkers who don't need dramatic peaks or fell-top views. Families with children under ten get the most mileage here - there's enough space to let them run about without losing sight of them, and the riverbank holds enough interest to justify the walk without being overwhelming. Birdwatchers will spend hours with binoculars. The footpaths are manageable rather than taxing, so it works as a gentle morning's activity rather than an all-day commitment.

Access appears to be free, and there's no particular admission building to navigate - you just arrive and walk. Allow two hours if you're taking your time, less if you're just after a quick circuit. The reserve really comes into its own from April through September when the woodland's actually in leaf and the birds are more active.

It slots perfectly into a longer park stay if you're based at Burrs Country Park or Dearden Wood nearby. Pair it with a walk around the actual parks themselves and you've got a solid day of green space without ever needing to drive far from Bury.
