Bury Castle (Remnants)

What's left of Bury Castle won't take your breath away - a few crumbling stone fragments tucked into the landscape near the town centre. But if you're into medieval history, it's worth understanding what stood here. This was a motte-and-bailey fortress built in the 11th century, the sort of strategic stronghold the Normans threw up across northern England. The mound itself is still visible, though the wooden palisade long since rotted away and the stone keep has been reduced to rubble.

History buffs will spend a decent hour poking about and trying to reconstruct what the defensive layout actually looked like. Everyone else might manage twenty minutes before heading into Bury town proper for something more substantial. There's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards - just the bones of it and your imagination.

Free to visit and accessible year-round, though there's not much to do when the light fails. Spring and early summer work best, when you can at least see the mound properly without being up to your ankles in mud. If you're camping nearby at Burrs Country Park - just over a mile away - it's a straightforward walk into town and worth a quick detour while you're there. Pair it with a proper look around Bury's textile heritage or the nearby market if you want to make a morning of exploring the area's medieval and industrial past.
