Nutshaw Hill

The walk up Nutshaw Hill starts innocent enough from Rossendale, but the climb gets proper steep towards the top. You're rewarded with broad views across the Rossendale Valley and the surrounding moorland - the kind of vista that makes the huffing worthwhile. On a clear day you can see right across Lancashire's hill country, though frankly the weather around here can turn in minutes, so don't rely on it.

This is walker territory, not a stroll. Allow a couple of hours return trip depending on your fitness and which route you take. The moorland terrain is rough underfoot in places, so proper boots matter. You won't find facilities up there - no cafe, no toilets, nothing - so pack water and snacks. The hill itself is free to walk, naturally.

Families with older kids who don't mind a real hike will get something from it. Younger children will probably flag before the summit. History buffs might be mildly interested in the industrial heritage of the valley below, but Nutshaw Hill itself doesn't have the dramatic stories some peaks carry.

If you're staying at Rossendale Holiday Cottages & Glamping nearby, this makes a solid afternoon outing. The proximity to town means you're not venturing far into the wilderness. Dearden Wood, further out, works as a base too if you're planning multiple walks across the area. Go midweek if possible - weekends bring out the local running clubs.
