Nursery Hill

The walk up Nursery Hill from Clitheroe takes the better part of an hour, depending on your fitness and how many times you stop to catch your breath. It's not steep enough to be properly punishing, but it's consistent enough that you'll feel it in your legs by the top. The views back down towards the town and across the Ribble Valley are genuinely worth the effort - on a clear day you can see for miles, which is rare enough in Lancashire that it feels like a proper achievement when you get it.

This is fundamentally a walkers' peak. Families with young kids will find it manageable but potentially tedious; there's nothing at the summit to detain you for long, just good views and a trig point if you're into that sort of thing. Older children who enjoy a straightforward hike will manage fine, and the descent is easier than the climb up.

The route is free, obviously - it's a fell walk. Allow a good two to two and a half hours return if you're moving at a standard pace and want to linger at the top. Spring and autumn are best; summer can get muggy, and winter requires proper boots given the exposed terrain.

If you're staying at Hedgerow Luxury Glamping or Peaks and Pods - both just a few miles south - Nursery Hill makes a solid morning outing before heading back for lunch. It's close enough that you're not losing half your day to travel, but proper enough that you've actually done something. Malham Glamping Pods, over in Yorkshire, is further afield, but Clitheroe itself is a pleasant market town worth exploring afterwards.
