Notts Pot

The entrance to Notts Pot doesn't announce itself loudly - it's a modest hole in the hillside near Carnforth, easy to walk past if you're not paying attention. Once you're in, though, it's proper claustrophobic and brilliant in equal measure. This is a short cave system with tight passages and a small underground stream, the kind of place that makes you grateful for torch batteries and a decent headtorch.

It's not for the faint-hearted or anyone wider than average - some passages require genuine squeezing. But if you've got teenagers who fancy themselves adventurers, or you're the sort of walker who likes something more than just moorland views, it's worth the scramble. Allow an hour or so, depending on how long you linger and whether you're taking photos in the cramped sections.

Technically it's free access, though there's not much in the way of facilities - bring your own lights and tell someone where you're going. The cave's most interesting in wetter months when the stream's properly flowing, though that also means muddier approaches. Summer visits tend to be drier but less dramatic.

If you're based at either Primrose Glamping Pods or Philpin Farm Campsite, this makes a good half-day activity to break up a park holiday. Pair it with a walk along the nearby fells and you've got a solid morning. It's the kind of thing that'll have adventurous kids talking about it for weeks - though smaller children might find the tight spaces genuinely frightening.
