North Slack Wood

A proper woodland walk that won't take all day - that's what North Slack Wood offers, just a short drive from Carlisle. The forest floor here is soft underfoot, dense with conifers and the kind of quiet you don't get often. There's a network of tracks running through it, nothing too ambitious, so families with younger legs can manage without complaints.

The main draw is the peace of it. No visitor centre, no tea shop, no crowds - just woodland as it should be. Walkers will appreciate the relatively flat terrain and the way the trees open out occasionally to give your bearings. You're looking at maybe 45 minutes to an hour if you take the main loop at a leisurely pace. Timing-wise, autumn's the obvious choice when the colours kick in, but honestly spring's just as lovely when the understory starts to green. Winter reveals the structure of the place better - you can see further through bare branches.

It sits well within a wider Cumbria trip. High Hall Farm Campsite and Drybeck Farm are both nearby and highly rated, so you could pair this with exploring the Eden Valley or heading up towards Penrith.
