North Heath

North Heath sits on the chalk downs just outside Stockbridge, a proper Hampshire landmark that locals know well but visitors often miss entirely. It's an open expanse of heathland - low scrub, wildflowers in season, and sweeping views across the Test Valley that actually justify the drive out here. The heath itself is manageable underfoot, nothing technical, though it can get boggy after rain so waterproof boots aren't a bad shout.

Walkers get the most from this one. You're looking at an easy hour's ramble, or stretch it to two if you're in no rush and fancy looping through the nearby downland. History types will appreciate that you're on ancient chalk grassland, the sort of terrain that's been grazed for centuries. Kids won't necessarily set the world alight here - there's no playground or visitor facility - but they'll enjoy the space to run about and spot rabbits or the occasional kestrel.

No entrance fee as far as anyone's aware, and it's open whenever you fancy it. Summer's the obvious choice when the wildflowers come through properly. Winter can be lovely too, mind you, if you catch a clear day and the frost's still clinging to the grass.

It slots nicely into a park holiday around Stockbridge. The Meadow Glamping is only 3.5 miles away, so it's a proper morning stomp if you're staying there. Stockbridge View and Salisbury Hillside aren't much further, making North Heath an easy add-on between your base and exploring the wider Test Valley.
