About Norham Castle
What you're looking at is centuries of Scottish-English hostility carved into stone. The keep is the main draw - a five-storey Norman tower that's somehow still standing despite getting hammered during various border conflicts. You can walk the perimeter, peer into the remains of the gatehouse, and stand on the ramparts squinting across the Tweed into Scotland. It's bleak and windswept and genuinely atmospheric, especially on an overcast afternoon.
Historically minded visitors will get more out of it - there's real medieval warfare baked into these walls, and the setting itself tells you everything about why this fortress mattered. Families with young kids might find it manageable for an hour or so, though there aren't massive amounts to actually do once you've climbed around.
Entry is free, and it's managed as a scheduled monument, so you can turn up whenever. From either Chainbridge Touring Caravan Site or Ord House Country Park - both solid bases within striking distance - it's a straightforward drive. Worth combining with Berwick itself, which is just up the road and infinitely more substantial for a proper day out. Don't expect facilities here, though. Bring a packed lunch if you want to linger.
