Noethgrug

The walk up Noethgrug isn't particularly long, but it's steep enough that you'll feel it in your legs by the top. Starting from near Llandovery, you're climbing roughly 1,600 feet across open moorland with nothing between you and the view - which is the whole point, really. On a clear day you can see right across the Black Mountains and beyond, though I'd be lying if I said it wasn't just moorland with sheep most of the time.

It's the kind of peak that works best for walkers who don't need hand-holds or scrambling, though the ground can be boggy depending on the season. Most people will manage it in a couple of hours there and back, which makes it good for an afternoon outing rather than an all-day mission. The ascent is straightforward if unremarkable - you're just heading uphill on a clear path without much drama.

Families with older kids will get on fine, but younger children might find it tedious without the promise of something exciting at the top. It's really the sort of walk where the point is the walk itself and the views when conditions allow.
