Newpiece Moor

The forest floor at Newpiece Moor crunches underfoot - a mix of bracken, pine needles, and last season's leaves that tells you straight away this is proper woodland, not some manicured park. It's a working forest in the Sussex countryside just outside Petworth, and what you're walking through feels genuinely wild compared to the tamed commons you find dotted around the South East.

There's no visitor centre or marked-up interpretation boards here. You get woodland as it actually is - tall conifers creating that cathedral-like canopy, clearings where the light floods in, and enough space to walk for hours without feeling hemmed in. The paths are decent enough underfoot, though they can get boggy after rain. It's the kind of place where a decent pair of boots matters.

This is prime territory for walkers and anyone who enjoys proper forest exploration over a casual stroll. Kids will manage it fine if they're the type who don't need constant entertainment, but it's not a destination that'll hold their attention if they're after obvious attractions. Photographers come here for the light filtering through the trees and the seasonal changes - autumn is particularly good.

It works well as a half-day outing if you're based at one of the nearby parks like Woodfire at Westerlands or Graffham, both within two miles. You could easily spend two to three hours walking without feeling rushed. There's no admission charge as far as we can tell - it's a public forest - which makes it refreshingly honest value. Petworth itself is close enough for lunch, and the wider area is strong for woodland walks if you want to chain a few together.
