The western edge of Petworth Park holds something most visitors miss - a proper nature reserve where the manicured grounds give way to something wilder. New Lodge West is where you'll find yourself among native woodland, open grassland, and the kind of birdsong that makes you actually stop walking to listen. It's a serious spot for naturalists and anyone who prefers their countryside without the stately home visitor centre attached. The woodland here feels genuinely remote despite being on the edge of a managed estate, and the mix of habitats means you're likely to spot things you wouldn't see in the formal gardens closer to the house. This is walkers' terrain - bring binoculars if you're into birds, comfortable boots if you're not. Allow a couple of hours minimum if you want to do it properly; rushing through defeats the point entirely. Free access, as far as I can gather, though it's worth checking locally before you head out. Families with restless toddlers might find it a bit underwhelming - there's no playground infrastructure here, just paths and nature - but older kids who actually enjoy looking at things will find it absorbing. If you're camping at Graffham or Wakestone, both under three miles away, this makes a proper morning or afternoon outing. It works best in spring when the migrant birds are moving through, or early autumn before everything gets too overgrown. The nearby market town of Petworth gives you somewhere to grab a proper lunch afterwards.
