New Lake

New Lake sits just outside Southampton, a proper freshwater spot that's become a favourite with locals who know where to look. It's the sort of place where you'll actually see people fishing rather than just posing for Instagram - walkers loop it regularly, and families with young kids find it manageable enough for an afternoon.

The water itself is fairly unremarkable from a distance, but get close and you'll spot wildlife worth watching: dragonflies in summer, the odd heron if you're quiet. There's a walking path that circuits the water, though it's not particularly long - you're looking at maybe 45 minutes to an hour if you take your time and don't rush.

It works best as a pit-stop rather than a destination in itself, which makes it handy if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks like Solent Breezes or Dibles Park. Nothing fancy, nothing staged - just a functional bit of Hampshire landscape that serves its purpose. Worth the detour if you're already in the area and fancy a stretch, but don't expect drama or rare birds. Go when it's quiet, early morning ideally, and you'll get more out of it than a Sunday afternoon when the school groups descend. Free to visit and no fixed hours that I can find, which is standard for council-owned water spaces round here.
