Neil's Point

The River Tummel curves sharply at Neil's Point, and it's worth stopping here for the view alone. This nature reserve sits just outside Pitlochry, a proper riverside spot where you can see why the river attracted settlement for centuries. The woodland walks here are straightforward rather than ambitious - you're looking at gentle paths through mixed forest, mostly flat, with the river conversation the whole way.

It's one of those places that works best if you're already in the area rather than a destination trip. Come here during a longer walk or while based at Faskally Woods or Milton Of Fonab - both are minutes away. The reserve itself takes an hour to explore properly without rushing, though you could cover it in half that if you just want the riverside stretch.

Family groups won't find facilities or attractions beyond the walking, so bring your own supplies. The woodland is damp underfoot even after dry spells, so decent boots matter. History types get something tangible here - you're standing where medieval and modern Perthshire converged, where the river was working harder than it does now.

The real appeal is seasonal. Visit spring for woodland flowers and active birdlife, or autumn when the riverside trees turn proper gold. Summer brings crowds to the river itself, which means the reserve stays peaceful. Winter can be grim - muddy paths and dim light.
