National Trust - Mottisfont

You're standing in front of a rather grand Georgian house in a bend of the River Test, about half an hour from Stockbridge. Mottisfont is a National Trust property that pulls in two very different crowds - the gardeners come for the rose garden (June is absurdly good), and the history types wander through rooms that tell the story of a 12th-century priory turned stately home.

The house itself is modest by National Trust standards, which is rather refreshing. You get genuine family rooms, not velvet ropes everywhere. The real draw is outside. That rose garden was designed specifically for Victorian varieties, and if you time it right in early summer, it's worth the visit alone. The grounds are generous enough that you won't feel rushed, and the riverside walks are proper pleasant - far less manicured than you'd expect.

Give yourself three hours minimum if you're doing both house and gardens. Less if you're rose-garden focused. Family groups with older kids will find it engaging; small children might lose interest after the house bit. The tearoom serves decent lunch if you're staying put.

If you're based at The Meadow Glamping or Stockbridge View nearby, Mottisfont makes an easy half-day trip. It's the sort of place that doesn't overwhelm you, which counts for something. Admission isn't free, but it's standard National Trust pricing.
