National Trust - Marsden Moor

The moorland rises sharply above Greenfield, stretching across 5,000 acres of proper Yorkshire terrain that feels about as far from a manicured garden as you can get. Marsden Moor is National Trust land, but there's no visitor centre or fancy facilities - it's raw moorland with footpaths cutting across heather, gritstone outcrops, and sudden steep valleys that catch you off guard.

Walkers absolutely thrive here. The terrain ranges from gentle rambles along the valley floor to genuinely knackering climbs up to the edges where the views open out across the Pennines. On a clear day you can see for miles. On a grey one, which is most of the time, the mist rolls in and the whole place becomes rather moody and atmospheric. Bring proper boots - it can be boggy, and the paths are often stone-pitched and slippery when wet.

Historically minded visitors will find traces of the old textile industry - mill buildings and reservoirs dot the landscape, remnants of when this valley powered the Industrial Revolution. It's not treasure-hunt stuff, but context helps you read the place properly.

There's no entrance fee or car park charge to my knowledge, though facilities are minimal. Allow anything from two hours for a gentle lower loop to a full day if you're tackling the high ground. The nearby Secret Valley Escapes and Dovestone Holiday Park both sit within striking distance for walkers - either makes a solid base if you're planning to spend proper time up here rather than just passing through.
