Narrow Water Castle

The ruins of Narrow Water Castle sit right on the Newry River, commanding the waterway like a stubborn old sentinel. What you're looking at is a squat, square tower keep dating back to the 16th century - nothing glamorous, but solid enough that it's still standing after five hundred years of neglect and weather.

You can walk round it easily enough, though the castle itself is closed to the public. The real appeal is the setting: the river narrows dramatically here, hence the name, and on a clear day you get proper views across the water towards the Mourne Mountains in the distance. It's the sort of place that rewards a twenty-minute wander more than a pilgrimage.

Historic military types will get something out of it - the castle was strategically positioned to control traffic along one of Ulster's key waterways. Kids might find the exterior interesting for five minutes, then want to move on. The real draw is if you're already in the area exploring Newry and fancy a riverside walk.

It's free to look at from outside, and it won't demand more than half an hour of your time unless you're genuinely into 16th-century fortifications. If you're staying at Kilbroney Caravan Park nearby, it's an easy detour on a morning walk - close enough that you could combine it with exploring the town proper. Not a must-do on its own, but well worth knowing about.
