Mynydd Trawsnant

The walk up Mynydd Trawsnant is proper steep, but the effort pays off once you're standing on the summit looking out across the Powys moorland. It's not a long trudge - most people manage it in under an hour from the car park near Llanwrtyd Wells - but you'll feel your legs working the whole way up.

What makes it worth the slog is the 360-degree view. On a clear day you can see for miles across Mid Wales, with the Brecon Beacons off in the distance. The peak itself is bare and windswept, nothing fancy, but that's rather the point. There's a sense of being properly up in the hills, away from the tourist crowds.

This is one for walkers with decent fitness. Don't bring toddlers expecting an easy stroll. Teenagers or adults who enjoy a good leg-stretcher will get far more from it. The terrain can be boggy depending on weather, so decent boots are essential rather than optional.

If you're staying at Welsh Glamping or Riverside Caravan & Camping Park nearby, both within easy reach of Llanwrtyd Wells, this makes a brilliant half-day outing. Combine it with exploring the town itself - there's a proper outdoor centre there and a few decent pubs. The walk doesn't take long enough to fill a whole day, but it's a cracking way to blow out the cobwebs before lunch.
