Bryn Mawr

Standing at 511 metres, this grassy hill offers one of those properly rewarding walks that reminds you why the Welsh hills beat the crowded peaks further south. The summit provides excellent views across the Irfon Valley and towards the Brecon Beacons, though you'll need to earn them with a decent climb from Llanwrtyd Wells.

Walkers with reasonable fitness will find the ascent manageable, though it's a proper hill rather than a gentle stroll. The route takes you through typical Welsh upland terrain - sheep-dotted fields giving way to rougher moorland as you gain height. On a clear day, the panorama from the top is well worth the effort.

Families with older children who enjoy a challenge will get the most from this one. It's not suitable for pushchairs or those wanting an easy amble. Allow three to four hours for the round trip, and check the weather before setting off - the summit can be exposed in poor conditions.

From nearby holiday parks like Welsh Glamping or Red Kite Touring Park, Bryn Mawr makes for an excellent day out when you want proper hill walking without the crowds of Pen y Fan. The small town of Llanwrtyd Wells sits conveniently at the base, offering cafes and pubs for post-walk refreshment. It's the sort of hill that gives you a genuine sense of achievement without requiring mountaineering skills.
