Mynydd Graig Goch

The walk up Mynydd Graig Goch rewards you with views across Snowdonia that justify the effort, even if the peak itself is modest by Welsh standards. From Garndolbenmaen, it's a straightforward approach through moorland and rough terrain - nothing technical, but proper boggy in places so decent boots are essential.

You're looking at a couple of hours to reach the summit and back, depending on fitness. The real appeal here is solitude rather than spectacle. You won't find crowds like you get on Snowdon, which makes it ideal for walkers wanting something a bit less trampled. The views open up nicely as you climb - Cardigan Bay comes into view, and on a clear day the ridge work across to other peaks is genuinely good.

Families with older kids will manage it fine, though younger ones might find the moorland going tedious. It's not a destination walk on its own, to be honest. What it does brilliantly is slot into a Snowdonia camping trip - you've got decent options within a few miles including Beddgelert Campsite and Cae Du, both within easy striking distance. Do this on a morning when the weather's playing ball, then move on to something with more drama elsewhere in the range.

Free to access, naturally. No facilities at the summit. Go early to avoid afternoon cloud rolling in off the coast.
