Mynydd Esgairneiriau

The walk up Mynydd Esgairneiriau is a proper lung-burner, but the views across Gwynedd make every step worth it. This isn't a well-trodden tourist trap - the peak sits quietly above Dolgellau, offering walkers genuine solitude and the kind of panorama that makes you understand why people move to North Wales and never leave.

The climb takes roughly two hours from Dolgellau depending on your fitness and the route you pick. There are a few ways up, but most start from the valley floor and gain height steadily through moorland. The final stretch opens out onto exposed ridge walking with the Cader Idris massif looming across the valley and, on a clear day, sight lines stretching toward Snowdonia. Weather changes fast up here - come prepared for wind and mist, even when the town below looks settled.

This is walker terrain, pure and simple. Not suitable for young children or anyone after a gentle stroll. But if you're spending time at Llwyn yr Helm Caravan and Camping Park or Torrent Walk Campsite, and you've got decent boots and a map, this delivers the kind of wild landscape that's become rare in Britain. The reward isn't a café or visitor centre - it's the ridge to yourself and the weight of the mountains around you.

Go early. Go midweek. Bring water. The descent is knee-testing, so save energy for the way down.
