Myddfai Chapel

The tiny whitewashed chapel sits alone in the Carmarthenshire hills, about 2.5 miles north of Llandovery, reached by a narrow lane that feels like it's going nowhere. Myddfai Chapel is genuinely small - the sort of place you could miss if you weren't looking - but it's got real pull if you're into Welsh religious history or just fancy a quiet walk away from the caravan park.

The chapel dates back centuries and has a proper local following. Inside, it's austere and whitewashed, with simple wooden pews and that particular smell of old stone and time. There's no faffing about with visitor facilities or interpretation boards, which is either refreshing or disappointing depending on your mood. You'll want to allow twenty minutes, tops, unless you're the type who sits in churches for a good hour contemplating life.

Walkers get the most from this one. It's not a standalone destination - you visit Myddfai as part of a longer ramble through the Tywi Valley rather than making it the day's centrepiece. The landscape around here is proper lovely, rolling green stuff with views that justify the leg work. Families with older kids who don't mind a quiet spot will find it peaceful; toddlers will get bored quickly.

If you're camping at Erwlon or Riverside Pods - both just down the road - it's absolutely worth the detour. Free access, no drama, and it gives you a sense of how communities actually worshipped in these isolated valleys. Worth the short drive from Llandovery town.
