More Hall Reservoir

The water here is genuinely still - you'll notice it the moment you arrive at More Hall Reservoir. It's a proper working reservoir on the edge of Sheffield, surrounded by moorland that feels a world away from the city itself. The walk around the perimeter takes a decent couple of hours and it's genuinely lovely, with the water reflecting the hills and sky depending on the light.

What makes it worth the trip is the quietness. You get walkers and the occasional cyclist, but it's never rammed. The moorland setting appeals to anyone after a straightforward leg-stretching walk rather than something with dramatic views or a heritage story. Families with kids aged eight and up will find it manageable - the path is clear and fairly level, though the wind can be bracing up here.

There's nothing formal about it - no visitor centre or café - but that's part of the appeal. It's free to visit and you can basically turn up whenever. Allow two to three hours for a full circuit, depending on pace and how much you dawdle.

It's not a headline attraction that demands a day trip from Sheffield itself, but as part of a broader park holiday exploring the Pennine moorlands, it does the job.
