Monxton

The village of Monxton sits quietly in the Hampshire countryside between Stockbridge and the Test Valley, and there's not much here to shout about - which is precisely why it's worth a look if you're passing through. This is proper old England: a Norman church, a scatter of flint cottages, and the kind of place where nothing much has changed in about two centuries.

The draw is St Mary the Virgin, a church with its share of medieval bones and a genuinely interesting interior if you like that sort of thing. The graveyard's pleasant enough for a wander, and the whole setting has that undisturbed quality you rarely find near bigger settlements. Walkers will appreciate it as a gentle detour on a ramble across the Test Valley.

Really, this is a site for people who enjoy slow exploration - historians, church hunters, folk who savour the quiet villages rather than the headline attractions. Kids will get bored after fifteen minutes unless they're the type to chase about graveyards. Allow an hour at most, half that if you're just popping in to see the church.

Free to visit. There's no infrastructure here, so bring what you need from Stockbridge. The village works well as part of a wider ramble across Hampshire's countryside, and if you're staying at Stockbridge View just up the road, it's an easy leg-stretcher without the crowds. Not essential, but if you're already in the area, don't skip it.
