The church sits right in Newport's heart, and it's worth popping in if you're already in town picking up supplies or heading to one of the nearby parks. St Mary the Virgin is a proper medieval church - the sort of building that's seen centuries of island life unfold around it. It's not a destination in itself, frankly. You won't spend hours here unless you're genuinely into ecclesiastical architecture or local history. Twenty minutes is probably your lot. Whether it's free or not, I honestly can't pin down with certainty, but most parish churches on the Isle of Wight are open during daylight hours without fuss.

Go in the morning if the sun's coming through the windows right - it transforms the place. Afternoons can feel a bit gloomy, depending on the season.
