Gallibury Hump

Bronze Age burial mounds don't get much more atmospheric than this lonely hilltop site south of Newport. The hump itself is exactly what it sounds like - a grassy earthwork rising from the surrounding farmland, marking where our ancestors laid their dead some 3,000 years ago.

Climbing to the top takes all of five minutes, but the views across the island's rolling countryside make it worthwhile. On clear days you can see right across to the mainland, which explains why this spot was chosen for such an important burial. The mound itself isn't dramatically high, but there's something properly evocative about standing where Bronze Age communities once gathered for their most solemn ceremonies.

History enthusiasts will appreciate the site's significance, though there's not much interpretation here - you'll need to bring your own knowledge or do some reading beforehand. Families with older children might enjoy the short walk and the chance to clamber about on ancient earthworks, but little ones will likely find it a bit dull after ten minutes.

It's easily reached from several holiday parks around Newport, including The Orchards and Grange Farm, both under three miles away. The site appears to be freely accessible year-round, making it a decent quick stop rather than a main destination. Allow half an hour unless you're planning a longer countryside walk.
