Monkdown Wood

You'll find yourself surrounded by proper woodland the moment you step into Monkdown Wood - it's the kind of place where the noise from Maidstone just falls away. Dense beech and oak trees create a canopy thick enough that you can walk in here even when it's raining elsewhere, and the paths are well-maintained enough that you won't spend the whole time staring at your feet.

It's ideal for families who want their kids to burn off energy without needing to drive far from town. The woodland is open enough for younger walkers, though there are some steeper sections that might test toddler legs. Dog owners will appreciate having proper space to let them off-lead, and serious walkers use it as part of a bigger loop through the Kent countryside.

There's no visitor centre or facilities that I'm aware of, so come prepared with water and snacks. Allow a couple of hours for a decent explore, though you can knock it back to 45 minutes if you're in a rush. Best visited in autumn when the light filters through the turning leaves, though it's pleasant enough year-round.

If you're staying at Bearsted Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite just 4 miles away, this is a natural choice for a morning walk before heading elsewhere. Chegworth Mill Glamping is slightly further at 6 miles, but still within easy striking distance. It's not a day out by itself, but it slots perfectly into a wider Kent park holiday.
