Moine Mhor National Nature Reserve

The flat boardwalk cuts through open wetland for a good mile, giving you proper views across the moss without the muddy boots. Moine Mhor - that's the Great Moss - is one of Scotland's largest raised bogs, and what strikes you most is how empty it feels. No trees crowding the horizon, just low vegetation, water channels, and the occasional bird call echoing across. You'll spot sphagnum moss, sundews if you look close, and on a clear day the distant hills frame the whole thing rather nicely.

Walkers love this place because the boardwalk keeps everything accessible. You're not scrambling through heather or picking your way over boggy ground - it's all laid out, though the wind can be bracing across that open expanse. Family groups do fine here if the kids are old enough to appreciate a gentle wander rather than wanting to dash about. History types will find the ecology angle interesting, though it's not a dramatic ruin or anything.

Allow an hour for the main boardwalk, maybe longer if you're twitching birds or taking photographs. There's no cafe or facilities that we're aware of, so bring what you need. Being free and within easy striking distance of Lochgilphead makes it a solid addition to any park holiday in Argyll. The Pod Over By is just 2.2 miles away, or Lochgilphead Caravan Park a bit further. Frankly, it works best as a break from driving rather than a full afternoon's activity, but on a bright day it's well worth pulling off the road for.
