Moel y Môr

Standing at 317 metres, this unassuming peak north of Llandysul offers something most Welsh hills don't - proper solitude. The climb through rough grassland and scattered gorse takes about an hour from the nearest road, though finding the right starting point can be a bit of a faff without clear waymarking.

Reach the broad summit and you'll understand why the locals keep this one quiet. Views stretch across the Teifi Valley to the Cambrian Mountains, with Cardigan Bay glinting in the distance on clear days. It's not dramatic in the way of Snowdonia, but there's something deeply satisfying about having a Welsh hilltop entirely to yourself.

Walkers who prefer well-trodden paths might find the approach frustrating - this is very much boots-and-map territory. Families with young children should probably look elsewhere, as the terrain can be boggy after rain and there's nothing to break the wind on top.

Pack a thermos and don't expect mountain café facilities - you're very much on your own up here. Worth the effort if you fancy earning your views rather than simply driving to them.
