Allt Ddu

Standing at 498 metres, this modest peak north of Llandysul delivers surprisingly good views across the Teifi Valley for relatively little effort. The summit itself isn't particularly dramatic - you'll find a small cairn marking the top and grassland that can get properly boggy after rain. But on a clear day, the panorama stretches from the Cambrian Mountains to the distant coast.

Walkers looking for a gentle half-day challenge will find Allt Ddu well worth the trudge. The route up isn't technically demanding, though the path can be vague in places and you'll want proper boots. Families with older children who don't mind a bit of mud should manage fine, but this isn't one for pushchairs or anyone expecting manicured footpaths.

Allow about two to three hours for the round trip, depending on how long you linger at the top admiring the view. The peak makes a decent addition to a camping holiday in the area - several sites like Greenfields Holiday Park and Wild Meadow Camping sit within easy driving distance. Come in autumn when the bracken turns golden, or after a spell of dry weather when the ground's more solid underfoot.
