Moel Y Gyrafolen

The walk up Moel Y Gyrafolen from Talsarnau takes you through proper Welsh hill country without the crowds you'd hit at Snowdon. It's a modest peak by most standards - nothing that'll require fell-walking boots or a head for heights - but the views back towards Cardigan Bay and inland across Gwynedd make it worth the effort.

The ascent is straightforward enough, following paths that wind through moorland and open grassland. On a clear day you can see for miles. The whole trip takes a couple of hours at a reasonable pace, so it works well as a morning or afternoon outing without eating your whole day. Families with kids who can manage a gentle climb will find it manageable, though younger legs might struggle with the final stretch.

There's something refreshing about how quiet it gets up here. You'll pass the occasional walker but nothing like the tourist factory at the bigger peaks. The landscape itself is the draw - rolling hills, distant views, and the kind of solitude that reminds you why people come to Wales in the first place.

Stay at either Barcdy or Woodlands caravan park nearby and you've got a solid base for exploring the wider area. The walk works best on a dry day when visibility is decent - bog and mist kill the appeal quickly. Being close to Talsarnau means you can combine it with a coastal ramble or a potter around the village without driving far.
