Moel y Geifr

The walk up Moel y Geifr rewards you with proper expansive views across Cardigan Bay and inland towards Snowdonia - the kind of panorama that justifies the scramble. It's not a mountain in the Alpine sense, more a confident hill that commands the landscape around Talsarnau in Gwynedd, and you can knock it off in a couple of hours from the car park if you're reasonably fit.

The route itself is straightforward enough: boggy in places, rocky towards the summit, nothing technical but you'll need decent boots. On a clear day the views stretch miles - the Llŷn Peninsula drops away to the west, and on the eastern side you're looking back towards the slate country inland. It's the kind of climb that appeals to walkers rather than casual strollers; you're not getting a café or interpretation boards at the top, just a trig point and serious breathing space.

Timing matters here. Early morning or late afternoon tends to clear the cloud that can otherwise cling to the higher ridges. Go at midday in summer and you might find yourself in mist despite the forecast saying clear skies. The winter approaches can be grim - muddy and slippery - so autumn is probably the sweet spot.

Staying at Barcdy or Woodlands puts you within striking distance for a morning excursion. It pairs well with Rhaeadr Nantcol Waterfalls nearby if you want to build a proper walking day. Families will manage the ascent if the kids are used to hills, though it's not a destination if you're looking for an easy afternoon stroll.
