Moel y Gadair

Standing 423 metres above Porthmadog, this modest peak rewards climbers with proper panoramic views across Cardigan Bay and the Snowdonia ranges. The climb takes about an hour from the nearest road, following a clear but sometimes boggy path through sheep pasture and heather.

Families with confident walkers aged 10 and up will manage this without too much huffing. The summit itself is nothing spectacular - just a small cairn and trig point - but the views are cracking on a clear day. You can spot the Llyn Peninsula stretching south and, if you're lucky, glimpse Snowdon's peak to the northeast.

Walkers staying at nearby caravan parks like Haven Greenacres or Black Rock Sands will find this makes for a decent morning's exercise before hitting the beach. The ascent is free, naturally, and best tackled in dry conditions when the path isn't a muddy mess.

Don't expect crowds - this isn't Snowdon. That's rather the point. It's a proper Welsh hill walk without the tourist hordes, though you'll need to bring your own entertainment for younger children who might find the summit a bit anticlimactic after the slog up. Well worth combining with a trip to nearby Porthmadog for lunch afterwards.
