Black Rock Sands

Three miles of proper golden sand stretches along the coast near Porthmadog, backed by low dunes and the occasional caravan park. Black Rock Sands is the kind of beach that works best when you're actually staying nearby - the car parks fill quickly in summer and the walk from town is bit of a trek. That said, if you're based at one of the touring parks practically on the doorstep (Black Rock Sands or Glan-Y-Môr are essentially right there), it's a genuine asset. The sand is firm, which means it's good for walking, cycling, and - if you're mad enough - driving. Families with young kids will appreciate how flat and safe it feels, though the water can be cold even in July. The beach itself is fairly exposed. Wind whips across unobstructed, which makes it brilliant for kite flyers and windsurfers but less appealing for sunbathing. There's not much shelter beyond what the dunes provide. The real draw is the space. You won't feel hemmed in here like you might on busier Welsh beaches. An hour's wander covers most of it, though if you've got time and energy, the coastal path stretching either direction offers proper views towards Snowdonia. Bring a packed lunch and stay longer. The nearest facilities are back towards Porthmadog, so don't expect beachside cafes or ice cream vans. It's free access, naturally - just pay for parking if you're driving in. Best visited out of peak season when the car parks aren't rammed.
