Moel Unben

The walk up Moel Unben takes about forty minutes from the car park near Abergele, and it's steep enough to make your legs know you've done something but short enough that you won't regret it. The summit sits at 555 metres and gives you proper views across the Vale of Clwyd - on a clear day you can see right across to Snowdonia, which never gets old no matter how many times you've done this walk.

It's the kind of peak that works brilliantly for families who aren't quite ready for a full day in the mountains but want something more rewarding than a flat forest trail. Older kids love it, teenagers tolerate it, and parents get a genuine sense of achievement. The path is well-defined and you're not scrambling over loose rock at the top, which matters when you've got someone aged seven in tow.

Walkers will appreciate how quickly you escape the lower ground and get proper views from halfway up. The whole outing takes about two hours if you're not rushing. Go on a weekday morning if you can - weekends bring families from Conwy and beyond, and the car park fills up fast.
