Moel Tecwyn

The walk up Moel Tecwyn starts gently enough from Talsarnau, but don't let that fool you - it's a proper slog once you commit. The peak itself isn't dramatic by Welsh standards, but the views across to Snowdonia and down towards the coast make the effort worthwhile. On a clear day you can see for miles. Allow two to three hours there and back, depending on fitness and how often you stop to catch your breath.

This is walker territory, full stop. Families with young children will find it tough unless they're the hardy sort who don't mind complaints at 300 metres elevation. The path isn't maintained like a tourist route, so decent boots matter. There's no cafe at the top, no facilities whatsoever - just you, the wind, and the view.

What makes it work is the lack of crowds. You won't be fighting through Instagram tourists here. The landscape changes as you climb - moorland gives way to rockier terrain, and the perspective on the surrounding hills shifts constantly. It's the kind of walk where you earn your view rather than have it handed to you.

If you're camping at Barcdy Caravan & Camping Park just 1.5 miles away, or any of the larger parks like Woodlands or Castle View, this makes a proper morning expedition. Pair it with gentler walks in the area, because Moel Tecwyn does demand your legs. Worth doing once - whether you'll want to do it again depends on your appetite for uphill slogs without summit facilities.
