Moel Llyfnant

The walk up Moel Llyfnant from Bala isn't long, but it rewards you with proper views across the Penllyn valley and down towards Lake Bala itself. On a clear day you can see right across to the Aran mountains, which makes the modest effort genuinely worthwhile.

It's a straightforward hill walk rather than a scramble - the kind of thing families with decent legs can manage without drama. Allow a couple of hours there and back from the town, maybe three if you're taking photographs or you've got younger kids who need encouragement. The path is well-trodden enough that you won't get lost, though it's steep in sections and muddy after rain.

The appeal here is landscape rather than destinations. You're not climbing to a summit tower or ruins or anything like that - just a hillside that gives you perspective on the surrounding terrain. That's either brilliant or a bit underwhelming depending on what you want. History buffs and peak-baggers will appreciate the Ordnance Survey satisfaction of bagging another one. Kids might get restless if the weather's poor and visibility drops.

Go in late afternoon when the light's better, or early morning before crowds (though crowds aren't really a thing up here). Free, obviously. If you're based at Tyn Cornel Camping nearby, it's a cracking way to stretch your legs without a full day commitment. Combine it with exploring Bala town itself for a proper morning out.
