Moel Iago

The walk up Moel Iago starts deceptively gentle. You're skirting the edge of Conwy Valley, somewhere between Abergele and the higher peaks that dominate this corner of North Wales, and for the first stretch it feels almost manageable. Then the path proper kicks in and you realise why locals rate this one.

It's a proper hill rather than a fell - 1,147 feet of it - but the views from the top justify every breath. On a clear day you're looking across to Snowdonia's main range, back down towards the coast, and if you're lucky you'll catch Conwy itself glinting in the distance. The summit's rocky enough to feel like you've earned it, without requiring ropes or mountaineering experience.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a family stroll, but it's not a hard slog either - most people manage it in about ninety minutes each way depending on fitness. The paths are decent if occasionally muddy. Allow three hours if you're the type who stops for photos.

If you're camped at Plas Farm Caravan Park or any of the other spots around Abergele, this makes a cracking morning or afternoon excursion. It's close enough not to eat into your holiday but far enough out to feel like proper countryside. Spring and autumn are best - summer gets rammed with midges up there, and winter can be slippery. Free to visit, obviously. No facilities at the top, so pack water.
