Moel Goedog Enclosure East

The Iron Age ramparts at Moel Goedog rise out of the Welsh moorland like a low crown, and once you've scrambled up there, the effort feels worthwhile. This is a proper hill fort - two concentric defensive banks still clearly visible, built around 2,000 years ago when this part of Gwynedd was a serious settlement. You can walk the outer perimeter and actually trace where the ancient inhabitants built their defences, which beats staring at a museum placard any day.

It's not a showy place. There are no information boards, no visitor centre, no car park - you park near Talsarnau and walk across open moorland to reach it. That's precisely why it's good. The site feels genuine, untouched by the heritage industry, and the views across Snowdonia from the summit are genuinely arresting. On a clear day you can see proper distance.

Bring decent boots. The approach is boggy in places, and the hill itself is steep enough that you'll notice it. History enthusiasts will get the most from a visit here - casual walkers might find the unmarked route fiddly and the lack of interpretation a bit frustrating. Allow a solid two hours if you're navigating from Talsarnau.

If you're based at Shell Island, Haven Greenacres, or any of the caravan parks clustered around this area, Moel Goedog makes a proper alternative to the obvious Snowdonia honeypots. It's the sort of place that rewards a bit of effort and rewards it properly.
