Mockett's Wood

Dark, quiet, and properly atmospheric - Mockett's Wood near Birchington is the sort of place you wander into expecting a quick stroll and end up losing an hour just breathing it in. Kids will find it interesting for about forty minutes, depending on their tolerance for "there's nothing to do here, Dad" - it's not a playground, there are no boardwalks or visitor facilities.

History types will appreciate that this is old growth forest, the sort of place that's been here for centuries. There's something about ancient woodland that makes you feel small.

If you're based at Birchington Vale Holiday Park or The Foxhunter Park, both within reasonable driving distance, Mockett's Wood makes a solid morning or afternoon break from park life. It costs nothing, takes as long as you want, and requires no booking. Go when it's not raining if you value your shoes.
