Milecastle 27 (Low Brunton)

The Romans built this fort around 122 AD as part of Hadrian's Wall, and what remains at Low Brunton is genuinely worth tracking down if you're in the Hexham area. You're looking at the substantial ruins of a milecastle - essentially a small garrison post that stood every Roman mile along the wall - with the stone foundations still visible and remarkably intact given what's been thrown at them over nearly two thousand years.

The site itself is open to the elements and costs nothing. There's no visitor centre, no cafe, no gift shop. Just you, the archaeology, and the Northumberland landscape. It's a fairly compact spot, so allow twenty minutes if you're just passing through, longer if you're the type to sit and imagine what life was like for the soldiers stationed here. History buffs will find it rewarding; families with young kids might get restless unless they're genuinely interested in Roman Britain.

Timing matters. Autumn and winter visits are often quieter and the light can be spectacular. Summer crowds are manageable since it's not as famous as the Vindolanda site nearby. The walk to it is straightforward enough, though the Hexham area has better facilities if you need them.

If you're basing yourself at one of the glamping pods - Sycamore is only five miles away - this makes an excellent morning outing before heading to more developed Roman sites in the region. Don't expect Instagram moments. Expect authenticity instead.
