Middle Staple Tor

The climb up Middle Staple Tor rewards you with proper Dartmoor views that make the slog entirely worthwhile. It's not a dramatic peak - more a rocky outcrop that juts out from the moorland around Tavistock - but once you're up there, the moorland rolls away in every direction with enough wildness to feel genuinely remote.

What you're doing here is straightforward: walking. There's no visitor centre, no café, no facilities. You park somewhere sensible near the tor and walk up. The rocks themselves are climbable if you fancy it, though nothing technical - just scrambling really. The trickiest bit is finding your footing on loose stone, and keeping your bearings in mist when it rolls in (which it does, frequently).

This is walkers' territory pure and simple. Families with older kids who don't mind a bit of exertion will get something out of it. History types less so - there's archaeology on Dartmoor aplenty, but Middle Staple Tor isn't a major draw for that. The real appeal is the walk itself and the views from the top. Allow ninety minutes at least, maybe two hours if you're dawdling.
